This February, we celebrated Chinese New Year (Year of the Snake) with an exciting trip to Chinatown, where the children immersed themselves in the rich traditions and vibrant culture of this important festival. They admired the stunning lantern displays, explored the bustling streets, and even went shopping for traditional snacks, experiencing new flavours for the first time.

This experience supported cultural capital by broadening children’s understanding of different cultures and celebrations, helping them make connections between their own experiences and the wider world. It also aligned with the British Value of mutual respect and tolerance, as children learned about the significance of Chinese New Year and the traditions that families follow during this time.

Observing and discussing the intricate lantern designs and decorations. Learning new words related to Chinese New Year, such as “dragon dance,” “lantern,” and “fortune.”

Exploring cultural diversity and different ways of celebrating the new year. Encouraging confidence in trying new foods and discussing different tastes. Back at nursery, the excitement continued through creative activities, where children made their own lanterns and dragon crafts, trying to write/mark make in Chinese, reinforcing their learning in an engaging in a hands-on way. This celebration helped to nurture curiosity, respect for diversity, and a love for cultural exploration among our little learners. – February 2025
